What types of court reporters are there?
There are two primary types of reporters: official and freelance. Officials are employees of the state and work in the courts. Freelance reporters primarily take depositions for individual attorneys who are conducting discovery in the course of a lawsuit. Regardless of whether the reporter is a freelancer or an official, the reporter’s sole purpose is to be a uninterested third party who will provide a verbatim transcript of the proceeding

NCIC Update
What request did the North Carolina Industrial Commission recently make of all court reporters providing transcripts to their agency regarding electronic transcript files?
The North Carolina Industrial Commission has recently made a request of all court reporters that provide transcripts to the agency. It is currently only a request, but may in the near future become a requirement. All transcripts should be accompanied by a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk containing an electronic transcript file. In addition, an e-mail should be sent to the commissioner or deputy commissioner handling the case with an electronic file attached. Acceptable formats are ASCII, WordPerfect 8 and above, or Word. The NCIC will not pay for these services.
E-mail addresses for individual NCIC commissioners and deputy commissioners are easily found on the NCIC web page. On the left-hand side of the home page is an alpabetical list that includes links to separate pages with biographical information and e-mail addresses for the Commissioners and the Deputy Commissioners.
